Hike to Festvågtind, Lofoten

Festvågtind is a beautiful hike located in Henningsvaer in the Lofoten. Henningsvaer is mostly know for its famous soccer field. The best-known image of this soccer field is of course from the air, because it doesn't look very spectacular from the ground. But what if we told you that you don't necessarily need a drone to see the soccer field from above. From Festvagtind, you get a beautiful view over Henningsvaer, but also over the surrounding mountains and fjord. The 360° view from the top is absolutely breathtaking and well worth the hike!

The hike

The start point of the trail is next to the main E10 road and indicated with a sign. You first walk through the bushes until you arrive at a large field with massive boulders. You have to climb and scramble over the boulders until you reach a proper path again. Then, the trail starts to ascent moderately steep until you reach a split/intersection. Here, you have to go left, to go straight to the top of Festvågtind. If you go right, you go to another lower viewpoint on Henningsvaer.

When you turn left, the trail flattens out for a short time, until it starts ascending again very steeply up a large rock field’. Once you get over this path of rocks, the trail becomes a little more steep and more sandy. The path wraps around the top of the mountain, until you reach the ridge and get a view on the sea on the other side of the mountain.

On this ridge, you turn left and start the last climb to the top of Festvågtind. You will need both hands and feet to climb on the rocks to the summit, but it is only a very short climb. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy an unforgettable view over Henningsvaer and the surrounding mountains and fjords.

When to hike

The best time to hike the Festvågtind is during summer/late summer, from Mid June to the end of September (until it starts to snow). There might be snow on the summit until mid June.

As there are some steep and slippery sections, this hike is not recommended in bad weather conditions. This hike is best done on a sunny and clear day or during a clear midnight sun night. It is a popular hike in Lofoten and there isn’t that much parking space. So during high season, we recommend you to start very early or as late as possible to be sure you find a place to leave your car and to be able to enjoy the hike to the fullest.

How to get there

The trail to Festvågtind starts next to the E10 road, close to Henningsvaer. There is a paid parking lot for this hike, that costs 190 NOK for 24 hours. This parking lot is indicated on Google Maps as ‘Festvågtind Car Park’. There are some free alternatives along the E10, close to the start of the trail as well.

On Google Maps, you can find the start of the hiking trail here.
