The Ryten hike is a popular hike in Lofoten, because of its incredible view on the famous Kvalvika beach. This mountain is located in Lofotodden National Park, one of the most famous hiking areas in Lofoten. You can choose to hike up directly to Ryten, or you can make a detour and also pay a visit to Kvalvika beach. Whatever you choose, you will defintely be rewarded with some spectacular views.
About the hike
3 to 4 hours
Out & back trail
Easy - Moderate - Difficult - Expert
You can start hiking up Ryten from two different parking lots. On both parkings, it is very clear where the trail starts. You follow the trail through the meadow and flowers, towards the mountain ahead until the trail turns right. From here, you just keep on following the trail until you start the first climb. Don’t forget to look around after the first climb, because you already get a stunning view over the valley.
At the top of the first climb, the trail flattens out a bit and continues west. Along the way, you will walk across some wooden platforms to help you over the muddy and wet ground in some areas and to protect the vegetation.
Once you’ve past a lake on your left side, you will see that the trail splits up. If you turn right, you will go to a shelter cabin. Just keep going straight and follow the sign to Ryten. A little further, you will see that the trail splits again. This is where you can choose to make a detour along Kvalvika beach or go straight to the top of Ryten.
If you don’t want to go to Kvalvika, you keep right and start the second and final climb to the top uphill. From the first summit you reach on Ryten, you can enjoy an incredible view over Kvalvika beach. But don’t forget to walk a little further to the right, to the actual summit of Ryten. From here, you can have some more incredible views over the ocean and the surrounding mountains and valleys.
When to hike
The hiking season for Ryten runs during spring, summer and autumn. During winter, the hike can only be done with snow shoes or on skis as the trail is covered in snow and ice.
It is not recommended to hike in bad weather conditions as the trail might get slippery. This hike is best done on a sunny and clear day or during a clear midnight sun night. Ryten can be very exposed to strong winds. Always be careful at the edge of the cliffs, especially with strong winds.
