About the Jomblang Cave

Goa Jomblang, also known as Jomblang Cave, is a series of connected caves, close to Semanu Village, near Yogyakarta on Java. This cave is gaining popularity because of its many unique features. One of these features is its vertical cave entrance, which is formed by the collapse of the karst ceiling, as a result of water erosion over thousands of years. Because of this vertical entrance, you can only enter the cave by descending on a rope, which makes the experience even more adventurous!

At the bottom of the cave, you will see that this sinkhole is filled with lush green vegetation. You first walk down a bit further to enter the big, dark tunnel of the Goa Jomblang. This tunnel leads to another cave or chamber, called ‘Grubua Cave’. This is where you will witness the highlight of the Jomblang Cave. During a certain time of the day, the sunlight shines in a massive hole in the ceiling, creating the ‘Ray of light’ or ‘Heaven’s light’, illuminating the interior of the cave. It looks like a gigantic spotlight and creates a very magical scenery.

A guide about the Jomblang Cave in Indonesia

Visiting Goa Jomblang

When you arrive at the Jomblang Cave, you’ll get your equipment such as rubber boots, a helmet and the staff will put you in a safety harness. You will be attached to multiple ropes for safety and lowered 60 meters to the bottom of the cave.

At the bottom, you will be released from the rope and you can take off the harness. As soon as the entire group is down into the cave, you will walk a little further down towards the dark tunnel. This is where things start to get muddy. The guide will shine a light in front of you, so that you can clearly see where to step. After a few minutes in the dark, you can catch the first glimpse of the Ray of lLght in the distance. The closer you get, the more impressive it becomes.

After spending some time admiring the light and the impressive rock formations in the cave, it is time to return to the vertical entrance of the cave. Here, you put on your harness again and about 20 men manually pull you back up. Don’t worry, it may seem very simple but it has a good safety mechanism. After this unique experience you can enjoy a hearty lunch, which is included in the price of the duration.

How to get there

From Yogyakarta, it is approximately a 1,5 hour drive to the Jomblang Cave. The best way to visit is by joining an organized tour from Yogyakarta. These tours include transport from Yogyakarta to and back from the cave and the Jomblang Cave entrance and tour price, so you don’t have to worry about anything.

If you organise your visit yourself, make sure to leave in time, because it can be very busy in the center of Yogyakarta.

Know before you go

1

Only one tour per day

There is only one tour each day at 09.30am. This means it is not possible to just show up and visit whenever you want during the day.

2

Book in advance

This one tour is limited to only 80 visitors per day. We highly advice you to make a reservation in advance online, if you don't join an organized tour from Yogyakarta. If you did not make a reservation, you can try to show up as early as possible before 09.30am (at least one hour in advance) to check if there's still availability, but we recommend you to contact them first before heading there.
And no worries, these 80 people are being split up in different groups, so you don't have to walk around with 79 other people the whole time.

3

Only Cash

The tour costs 500.000 IDR per person and can only be paid in CASH.

4

The cave is muddy

The cave is very muddy and slippery in some places. They provide you with rubber boots, but it is better to not wear your best clothes. Also, the boots are not the most comfortable, so we advice you to bring high socks to avoid blisters on your ankles. It might even be a good idea to bring a spare pair of clothes, just in case... slips happen.

5

The total time is around 3 hours

The tour starts at 09.30am and takes around 3 hours. When you are pulled back up out of the cave and have returned the equipment, you can enjoy a local lunch that's included in the price!
