Overview

About the Liechtenstein Gorge

The Liechtensteinklamm, or Liechtenstein Gorge, is a deep and narrow gorge located in the Austrian Alps in the Salzburg region of Austria. It is named after Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein, who financed the construction of pathways and bridges to make the gorge accessible to the public in the late 19th century.

The gorge is 4 kilometers long and, with its vertical walls of 300 meters height, it is one of the deepest gorges in the Alps. It is even considered one of the most impressive and deepest gorges in Europe. At the bottom of the gorge flows the Großarler Ache mountain stream, which created the gorge by its eroding force over thousands of years.

Of the 4-kilometer gorge, approximately 1,5 kilometers is accessible to the public. The gorge is easy to walk through via the man-made pathways with the famous spiral staircase, along paths, stairs, bridges, and tunnels. At the end of the gorge, you can admire the 49-meter-high Liechtenstein waterfall. The hike through the gorge takes about 1,5 hours in total.

A guide about visiting the Liechtensteinklamm in Austria

Visiting Liechtensteinklamm

From any of the four parking lots, you first walk to Gasthaus Liechtensteinklamm along the Liechtensteinklammstrasse. Pass the restaurant, and keep following the road to the entrance of the gorge. Here, you can purchase your tickets or you can skip the line by buying your tickets online.

As soon as you’ve passed the ticket gate, you just keep following the trail into the gorge.

After a few hundred meters you cross a bridge and continue through several tunnels until you reach the beginning of a metal staircase.

At the top of these stairs, you will find a viewing platform from where you can see the famous spiral staircase down. Via these stairs, you descend again into the gorge.

Here you explore the narrowest part of the gorge via various illuminated tunnels and galleries, along walking paths and bridges. You can see, feel, and hear the beautiful blue water making its way through the rugged cliffs.

The pathway ends at the end of the gorge, where you can admire the beautiful Liechtenstein waterfall.

You return to the entrance via the same route.
