About Fuschlsee and Schober
Fuschlsee is a beautiful lake in the region of Salzkammergut and the state of Salzburg in Austria. It is located about 20 kilometers east of the city of Salzburg. The lake is mostly known for its clear and emerald-green water and has a surface area of about 2.7 square kilometers. At its deepest point, Fuschlsee has a depth of 66 meters.
In the region, there are numerous hiking trails from where you have a scenic view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. On the lake itself, you can also enjoy numerous activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, etc.
Schober is a mountain located near Fuschlsee and is part of the Salzkammergut Mountains. It has a height of 1328 meters and offers an amazing view of the surrounding lakes, like Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee, and Mondsee, and the surrounding mountains.

Schober-Frauenkopf hike
There are two places from where you can start hiking to the top of Schober and Frauenkopf. One hike starts in the valley at Fuschlsee itself. The other one starts a little higher up at the parking lot of Forsthaus Wartenfels. This second hike is also the route that we describe in this blog post. When you start hiking at Fuschlsee, you first have to hike to Forsthaus Wartenfels, adding 5,5 kilometers and 260 elevation gain to your hike.
Since it is a loop hike, you can do the hike in both directions. However, we recommend that you hike clockwise. In this direction, you first climb to the top of Schober and then over Frauenkopf. This way you do the steepest climbs uphill, which is safer.

Forsthaus Wartenfels to Schober
1,4 kilometer - 330 meters elevation gain
From the parking lot, you walk along the asphalted road towards the restaurant. Here you take the stone path on the right and follow the arrows in the direction of Schober. After walking slightly uphill for about 500 meters you will pass the Burgruine of Wartenfels. Be sure to take a look here because from here you already have a beautiful view.
Right after the castle, a steep climb begins. You zigzag steeply up a forest path with large tree roots. After this zigzag, the path changes to a mountain path with more stones, rocks, high man-made steps, and wooden stairs. Along the way, you can already catch some glimpses of the beautiful blue Fuschlsee.

In the last part, you really have to climb and clamber up on the rocks, where you sometimes even have to use your hands and feet. In some parts, there are steel cables attached to which you can hold yourself.
After this tough climb, you arrive at the cross at the summit of Schober. From here, you can enjoy the impressive 360° view over the lakes of Salzkammergut and surrounding mountains like Dachsteinmassives.

Schober to Frauenkopf
300 meters - 17 meters descent
From the top of Schober, follow the path down next to the wooden hut. Follow this path for about 300 meters until the signpost indicates where you should turn right to Frauenkopf. It is only a very short climb to reach the cross on the summit.
Interesting fact: Legend has it that in the past the Frauenkopf was a place of pilgrimage for infertile women.

Frauenkopf to Forsthaus Wartenfels
1,6 km - 313 meters descent
From Frauenkopf, you follow the trail to start your descent. The first part consists of large steps with many big tree roots. After a while, the path changes into a zigzag road with loose stones going down. Be careful because you can easily slip on this trail. The path ends at a wider road. Here you turn right and follow the path back to Forsthaus Wartenfals.
