Travel Insurance
Why Do you need a travel insurance?
Protection against cancellations
Imagine you've been planning a dream vacation for months and then an unforeseen event forces you to cancel your trip. Without travel insurance, you might lose a significant part of the money you've already paid. It is one of the most common reasons people consider a travel insurance, because a travel insurance can reimburse you for non-refundable costs.
Sickness or injury
Everyone can get sick or injured at any time, so even you or your travel companion right before or during your holiday. Also a non-traveling family member can get hospitalized or pass away, which makes you have to cancel your trip or return earlier. A travel insurance can cover all your medical expenses abroad, reimburse your prepaid expenses when you have to cancel your holiday or for a portion of the trip that you missed and even help you return home.
Delays and interruptions
Flights can be delayed or canceled for various reasons and this happens more often that you'd expect. Also stolen passports, traffic accidents, natural disasters and many other unexpected situations could delay or interrupt your trip. In such case, a travel insurance can help you cover costs for additional accommodation, transportation, meal expenses and so on.
Lost and Delayed luggage
Lost or delayed luggage is not uncommon. In fact, it even happened to us already. With a travel insurance, you can be reimbursed for lost, stolen or damaged luggage or personal items and you can get compensation to help you replace some essential items.
Theft and Loss
Theft or loss of personal belongings, including passports, phones, cameras and other valuable items can cause a lot of inconvenience. A travel insurance can help you recover the financial losses resulting from theft or loss.
Even the best-planned trips can be impacted by the most unexpected events. From the most small and banal incidents, such as losing your phone or breaking your camera, to major matters such as ending up at a hospital and repatriation. Travel insurance is essential to protect yourself from these kinds of situations. It is often an overlooked investment and you always hope you will never need it until something happens… With travel insurance, you can go on holiday with peace of mind, knowing that there is always a solution if such situations arise and that your holiday does not turn into a financial disaster.
If you’re still wondering ‘Should I get travel insurance and what kind of unexpected things should and can I protect myself from?’, we have listed a couple of reasons to answer these questions.

What should you take into account when choosing a travel insurance
What type of travel insurance is best for you and your trip(s), depends on different factors, such as the kind of trip(s) you are going on and what kind of traveler you are. An adventurous backpacking trip with risky activities for a couple of months requires a different travel insurance than a 3-day city trip to Paris. Depending on you, the type, destination, and duration of your trip, you should think about the unforeseen events that can happen and the reason you might need to cancel…
We have listed the main aspects you should check to choose the right travel insurance:
Kind of trip and activities
Different trips have different needs. Make sure the destination you are going to, is covered by the travel insurance. You also have to check whether insurance covers the specific risks associated with your trip and activities you plan to do during your trip, such as extreme sports.
Duration of your trip
Most travel insurance policies cover a period of up to 90 consecutive days abroad. If you plan to stay abroad for more than 90 days, you should check whether your travel insurance offers longer coverage. Sometimes it is possible to extend your travel insurance per month, but not with all insurance companies.
Coverage limits
You have to pay attention to the coverage limits of medical expenses, trip cancellations and luggage loss. It is important to estimate the value of your belongings and the total price of your trip and make sure it equals the limits of the travel insurance.
pre-existing medical conditions
If you have pre-existing medical conditions, you have to check whether they are covered by the policy of the travel insurance, because this is often not the case. It is also important to note that your travel insurance only covers medical care costs for 'emergency' medical care and not for your daily medication.
Cancellation and Refund Policies
Make sure you understand the cancellation and refund policies of the travel insurance. Generally, they only cover trip cancellation if you cancel due to a reason listed in the policy, which are unforeseen events beyond your control and not just because you changed your mind about going on your trip.
Exclusions
It is important to know and understand what is excluded from your travel insurance. Some policies may not cover certain activities, injuries from risky behavior or events like epidemics. Travel insurances generally don't cover losses due to reasons and circumstances that are within your control as opposed the unforeseen events.
Our Travel Insurance
For our 4-month trip to Southeast Asia, we opted for the Long Trip World insurance of Europe assistance. They offer full travel insurance and cancellation insurance to roadside assistance and so on. For travel insurance, you can choose from various options such as one-year insurance for people who travel often, insurance for a single trip, or even fully customized insurance. From basic insurance to all-in insurance, we are sure that at Europ Assistance you will find the ideal insurance that fully suits your wishes and trip.
Why did we choose for the Long Trip World of Europ Assistance?
They were one of the few companies we found that could easily cover a trip abroad of more than 90 consecutive days. The travel insurance we got, covers the whole world (except high-risk countries and areas).
So during our trip, we don’t have to pay attention to which countries we are ‘allowed’ to travel. It also covers all kinds of activities we plan to do in Southeast Asia and just about anything else you can think of that could happen during our trip, such as medical emergencies, lost and damaged luggage, theft, loss, and so on. We are very satisfied that we chose this insurance and are happy that we can leave for our trip with peace of mind.
