Overview

Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Lombok is home to some impressive waterfalls. Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfall are two waterfalls not far from each other, making it easy to visit them during one trek. They are located at the foot of Mount Rinjani, almost in the heart of Lombok.

The Benang Stokel waterfall normally consists of three streams around 30 meters high, but when we visited during dry season, unfortunately, only 2 were visible. Only a 15-minute walk further, you find the Benang Kelambu waterfall. It is one big giant wall with vines and some curtains of falling water around 20 meters high, located amidst a tropical, lush green jungle environment.

There are multiple waterfalls in this area and when you arrive, you have to choose between different packages. You can choose to visit only 2 waterfalls (Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfall) or 4 waterfalls. Because the prices are quite high, we recommend choosing the two waterfall package. They say the prices are high because as a foreigner, you have to go with a local guide. However, we didn’t want a guide so we went without, but we still paid the same price.

The hike to the waterfalls

Once you arrive at the entrance, they’ll lead you to the ‘ticket office’, where you have to choose your package. If you choose the two-waterfall package, you have three options:

  1. The first option is walking from the main entrance to the waterfalls.
  2. If you came with your own scooter, you can also drive a little further from the entrance to a second ‘parking lot’ closer to the waterfalls, which will save you around 30 minutes of walking.
  3. As a third option, they also offer scooter transport if you did not come with your own scooter or are not confident driving the difficult road to the second parking lot.

We came with our own scooter, and even though we didn’t want a guide, someone guided us on the moped to the ‘second parking lot’ closer to the waterfalls. This part of the road is in very bad condition. So we don’t recommend it if you are not used to riding a scooter. It is then better to choose option three with transport to the parking lot.

When you arrive at the second ‘parking lot’, closer the the waterfalls, there are two trails. The trail on the left goes to Benang Stokel and takes around 15-20 minutes to reach the waterfall. The other trail leads to the Benang Kelambu waterfall and takes around 5-10 minutes. On your way there, you pass another beautiful waterfall on your left.

Both walks are not difficult, but you have to be careful as they can sometimes be slippery. It is always a go-and-back trail to these waterfalls if you choose to drive to the second parking. If you choose to start walking from the main entrance, it is just one long go-and-back trail.

Best time to visit

Season

You can visit the Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfall all year round. If you prefer to visit with more chance for better weather, it’s best to visit during dry season, from May to October. However, during the rainy season, from November to April, especially at the end of it, the waterfalls are most powerful and spectacular. Therefore, May is overall the best month for the best weather and still powerful waterfalls at the beginning of the dry season.

Time of the day

The best time to visit Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfall is before 10 am, before the day trippers arrive. If you want to be almost certain that you have the waterfalls just for yourself and for great lighting, we recommend that you go as early in the morning as possible and try to avoid visiting during the weekend. On the other hand, you will never encounter the large masses here that you have at the famous waterfalls in Bali.
