About Kapas Biru

Kapas Biru is a super impressive waterfall in the Lumajang province in East Java, Indonesia. The name Kapas Biru means ‘blue cotton waterfall’ and probably comes from the blueish color it gets in the evening. This waterfall is just a 10-minute drive from the famous Tumpak Sewu, so you can easily combine a visit to both.

You may not be able to see it from below, but the waterfall actually consists of two levels. The upper level is about 10 meters high and the lower level, that you can see, is about 90 meters high, making the waterfall a total of around 100 meters high! So, you can imagine the power of the falling water. When you stand at the foot of the waterfall, you will definitely get soaking wet from the wet mist that the waterfall creates.

To reach this Kapas Biru waterfall, you have to do a steep hike down, which is even more challenging on the way back, but it is definitely worth the effort to experience the power of this waterfall.

Complete guide about the Kapas Biru Waterfall in Indonesia

Kapas Biru Waterfall Hike

The trail is pretty straightforward and takes about 25-35 minutes one way. You start your hike on a clear path behind the parking lot. Only a few minutes later, the path turns into a stairs and you start descending down into the valley. In some parts, there are wooden and metal handrails to hold yourself and one part where you have to climb down a ladder. It might be a bit sketchy, but perfectly doable. Be careful on your way down, because the trail can be slippery sometimes.

Once you reach the bottom of the valley, the stairs turn into a sandy and rocky trail. From here, you walk the last 10-15 minutes alternately up and down through the jungly green valley, but no more steep parts. At the end of the trail, you walk over a small bridge and you will be able to catch your first glimpse of the waterfall between the trees. Be careful as you approach the waterfall, because the closer you get, the more slippery the rocks will get.

Remember that on your way back, you have to climb up the stairs again. This might be a bit more exhausting than the way down, so bring enough water. There are no facilities at the waterfall or on the trail.
