Hiking in Lapland
Lapland is a very famous destination during winter because of its winter wonderland scenery and unique activities. However, summer in Lapland also has quite a lot to offer. Its nature is super beautiful and vast. The mountains are not very high, making most hiking trails very accessible. Hiking in Lapland really connects you with nature and is a wonderful experience to clear your head. There are various national parks and countless hiking options in different areas of Finnish Lapland.

We have listed our 3 favorite hiking trails that you should definitely do. From impressive fells and forests to rugged canyons and lakes, these 3 hikes cover it all. Several of these hikes require you to cross one or more suspension bridges, adding some adventure to the experience. And we haven’t even mentioned the variety of wildlife you can encounter during these hikes, like squirrels, deer, and many different species of birds.
1. Pyhä-Nattanen

The Pyhä-Nattanen trail is a loop trail of around 6,5 km, that takes you to the summit of the Pyhä-Nattanen Fell. It is a relatively easy and suitable hike for beginners. From the top, you get an amazing panoramic view of the rugged landscapes of Nattastunturi and Sukkulalampi. Besides the views, you also find a fascinating natural rock formation on top. Don’t forget to enter the shelter hut and write your name in the guest book!

As part of the loop, you walk along the Sompiojärvi forest road. You can either park your car on the border of the strict nature reserve or at a point located about 1 km further on the road. Alternatively, you can also make it an out & back trail and just hike the same path back as you hiked up.
The trail is marked with wooden cross signs and orange dots. In this nature park, it is asked to stay on the marked paths.

2. Julma-öllky
In Hossa National Park, you find the stunning and rugged Julma-Ölkky Canyon. There are several hiking trails in the national park of which two take you around the canyon.
The Julma-Öllky Canyon was formed during the last ice age when glaciers retreated, leaving behind a deep and narrow canyon. The walls rise steeply from the water, creating a dramatic and picturesque landscape. Julma-Ölkky’s main attraction is the deep and clear lake that runs through the canyon. It is said to be the biggest canyon lake in Finland.

The calm and crystal-clear water makes it also an ideal spot for kayaking and canoeing. Renting a kayak or canoe is a popular way to explore the lake and experience its unique beauty up close. On top of being the perfect place for hiking and kayaking, you can also find some historic rock paintings on the cliffs.
