About the Nungnung Waterfall
The Nungnung waterfall is located in the center of Bali, near the village of Nungnung in the Tabanan Regency. It is a quite impressive waterfall, with a height of around 50 meters and known as one of the most powerful waterfalls of Bali. You will definitely get wet by the spray caused by this waterfall, so protect your belongings well.
Because of its more secluded location, this waterfall tends to be less crowded than the more famous waterfalls closer to the popular tourist areas like Ubud. If you want to be almost certain that you have the waterfall just for yourself, we recommend that you go as early in the morning as possible.
To reach this waterfall, you have to descend a series of 500 steps into a lush green canyon, with some steep sections. The way back up can therefore be quite difficult, but we can assure you that this waterfall is definitely worth it! Don’t forget to bring enough water and snacks.
There is a natural swimming pool at the foot of the waterfall. If you want to take a dip, you have to be careful because the power of the waterfall is enormous and can hurt you. You will not find any facilities at the bottom of the waterfall. There are only toilets, changing rooms and a few little stalls selling drinks and snacks at the parking area.
The hike to the waterfall
The path to the Nungnung waterfall is clear and consists of a long staircase of about 500 steps. You descend into a green gorge, so you walk through beautiful jungle surroundings with tropicals plants the entire time. On your way, you pass a couple of smaller waterfalls as well. Some sections can be steep and slippery, so always be careful when descending. Just before the last part, you have to cross a bridge to the other side of the gorge. From here, it is only a short distance to the waterfall.
At the waterfall, you can cross a small bridge again to get to the foot of the Nungnung waterfall. Be careful because the rocks you have to cross on the very last part can be very slippery.
The hike is not that long and takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the bottom waterfall. The way back up can be exhausting and takes more like 25-30 minutes. Along the trail, there are some shelter benches to take a rest.
How to get to there
To get to the Nungnung waterfall, you have a few different options. Renting a scooter is the cheapest and probably the fastest way. However, it is quite a long drive, so if you prefer a more comfortable ride, it’s better to hire a private car with driver. Alternatively, you can book a complete day tour, including some other sights on the island as well.
Nungnung waterfall is located halfway between Munduk or Singaraja and the more popular tourist area of Ubud. From either of these areas, it takes about 1h-1,5h to reach Nungnung Waterfall.
To get to the Nungnung Waterfall entrance, you can navigate to Nungnung Waterfall Carpark on Google Maps.
Tip: You can combine a visit to the Nungnung waterfall with the Leke Leke waterfall. This is another beautiful waterfall in a lush green environment, located a 30-minute drive from the Nungnung waterfall. If you come from Ubud, you will almost drive past it anyway.
Where to Stay
Depending on what other things you plan to do and visit in Bali, you can either stay in Ubud or in Munduk. From both of these places, it is about a 1 hour to 1.5 hour drive to the Nungnung waterfall.
In Ubud, you will find plenty of accommodations for every budget. There is also something for everyone in Munduk, although the choice here is slightly less extensive than in popular Ubud.
Ubud is more centrally located, and is a great base to explore many other highlights of Bali. Munduk is a bit more untouched and tranquil, so it all depends on what you prefer!

Best time to visit
You can visit the Nungnung waterfall all year round. Unlike many other waterfalls in Bali, this waterfall does not dry out in the dry season. However, during rainy season the waterfall is most powerful and spectacular. If you prefer to visit with more chance for better weather, than it’s best to visit at the beginning of dry season.
The best time to visit Nungnung waterfall is before noon to visit with less people. The later in the day you arrive, the more people you can expect at the waterfall. If you want to be almost certain that you have the waterfall just for yourself and for the best lighting, we recommend that you go as early in the morning as possible.
