Overview

Visiting the Nungnung Waterfall

The Nungnung Waterfall is located in central Bali, near the village of Nungnung in Tabanan Regency. It’s an impressive waterfall, with a height of about 50 meters, and known for its powerful flow. You can expect to get misted (or even soaked) by the spray, so keep your belongings protected!

Since it’s located a bit away from popular tourist areas like Ubud, Nungnung tends to be quieter and less crowded. For the best chance at having it to yourself, head over early in the morning.

The Nungnung waterfall

To reach the waterfall, you’ll go down about 500 steps through a lush green canyon with a few steep sections. The climb back up can be tough, but the view at the bottom makes it all worth it. Don’t forget to bring enough water and maybe some snacks.

There’s a natural pool at the waterfall’s base where you can take a refreshing dip if you’re up for it. Just keep in mind that the water’s force is strong, so swim with caution. Facilities are minimal at the bottom, but up at the parking area, you’ll find restrooms, changing rooms, and a few small stalls selling drinks and snacks.

Hike to the Nungnung Waterfall

The path to the Nungnung waterfall is clear and consists of a long staircase of about 500 steps. You descend into a green gorge, so you walk through beautiful jungle surroundings with tropical plants the entire time.

On your way, you pass a couple of smaller waterfalls as well. Some sections can be steep and slippery, so always be careful when descending. Just before the last part, you have to cross a bridge to the other side of the gorge. From here, it is only a short distance to the waterfall.

At the waterfall, you can cross a small bridge again to get to the foot of the Nungnung waterfall. Be careful because the rocks you have to cross on the very last part can be very slippery.

The hike is not that long and takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the bottom waterfall. The way back up can be exhausting and takes more like 25-30 minutes. Along the trail, there are some shelter benches to take a rest.

How to get there

To get to the Nungnung waterfall, you have a few different options. Renting a scooter is the cheapest and probably the fastest way. However, it is quite a long drive, so if you prefer a more comfortable ride, it’s better to hire a private car with a driver. Alternatively, you can book a complete day tour, including some other sights on the island as well.

Nungnung waterfall is located halfway between Munduk or Singaraja and the more popular tourist area of Ubud. From either of these areas, it takes about 1h-1,5h to reach Nungnung Waterfall.

To get to the Nungnung Waterfall entrance, you can navigate to Nungnung Waterfall Carpark on Google Maps.

Tip: You can combine a visit to the Nungnung waterfall with the Leke Leke waterfall. This is another beautiful waterfall in a lush green environment, located a 30-minute drive from the Nungnung waterfall. If you come from Ubud, you will almost drive past it anyway.

Where to stay

Depending on what else you plan to explore in Bali, you could stay in either Ubud or Munduk. Both spots are about a 1 to 1.5-hour drive from Nungnung Waterfall.

Ubud offers a wide range of accommodation options to fit any budget, while Munduk has fewer choices but still enough variety.

Ubud is centrally located, making it a great base if you’re looking to explore Bali’s other popular attractions. Munduk, on the other hand, is quieter and more off-the-beaten-path, which is perfect if you’re looking for a more peaceful vibe. It all comes down to what kind of experience you’re after!

Best time to visit

You can visit Nungnung Waterfall any time of year! Unlike some of Bali’s other waterfalls, Nungnung flows year-round, even in the dry season. During the rainy season, though, it’s at its most powerful and dramatic. For better chances of clear weather, the beginning of the dry season is a great time to visit.

If you’re looking to avoid crowds, aim to go before noon—the earlier, the better. Arriving in the early morning not only means fewer people but also the best lighting for photos and a more peaceful experience.
