Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingang
Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan is an ancient 10th-century temple that was built in the middle of a volcanic caldera, on the shore of Lake Danau Tamblingan. It’s a fantastic place to explore and take pictures. Especially when the clouds descend in the background, which happens quite often in this area, a mysterious atmosphere is created around this temple.

Munduk Waterfall Trek
In Munduk, you find some of the most beautiful nature and landscapes in Bali. With many stunning waterfalls nearby, it is the place to be for waterfall lovers. Here, you even have the option to do a 3-4 hour trek through the beautiful jungle of Munduk, which takes you past 4 different waterfalls: Golden Valleys, Red Coral, Labuhan Kebo, and Melanting. You can either start the hike in the village of Munduk, or you can start at Desa Eko.

Explore more Munduk waterfalls
In addition to the four waterfalls that you can discover during the Munduk waterfall trek, there are a few other waterfalls in the area of Munduk that are definitely worth a visit. Ideal for a full day of chasing waterfalls.
Don’t forget to bring your swimwear, because at some of these waterfalls, you can take a refreshing dip in the water. Certainly welcome, because you often have to descend a lot of stairs and steep paths to reach these waterfalls and then climb back up again afterward. That is why it is also important to wear sturdy shoes so that you do not slip.
Banyumala waterfall
The Banyumala Twin Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall in the Wanagiri region. As its name suggests, it is actually two waterfalls right next to each other. At the foot of the waterfalls, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural swimming pool. At the entrance, you receive a small bottle of water and a nice souvenir. The bottle of water is very welcome if you didn’t bring your own, because it is a short but steep descent to the entrance and another descent to the waterfall.

Banyu Wana Amertha
At the Banyua Wana Amertha, you do not find just one but four incredible waterfalls, each very different and unique. The biggest and, to our opinion, most impressive one is the Bhuana Sari waterfall. It is still quite a hidden gem and you will not encounter many tourists there.

Entrance fee: 40.000 IDR

Gitgit Waterfall
The Gitgit waterfall is one of the biggest waterfalls in Bali and a very impressive one. At this waterfall, you find a small Bali gate that gives you access to the cascading water.
To reach this waterfall, you have to follow a path that is lined with little souvenir shops. Some sellers were quite pushy, which made the experience a little less pleasant. But the waterfall itself makes it more than worth it!
Tip: Don’t mix this waterfall up with the Gitgit twin waterfall. This is another waterfall not far from the Gitgit waterfall. We didn’t visit this one, but it might be worth a visit too!

Black Sand Beach in Lovina
Have fun in Lovina
Discover Lovina by joining one of the many amazing activities in the region!
Sunset bars in Lovina
If you are in the northern part of Bali to enjoy Lovina beach, you might as well stay until the evening, sit in one of the sunset bars, and watch the sun disappear into the endless sea with a cocktail. You will find plenty of nice bars on the beach, where you can plop yourself down in one of the many colorful beanbags. There is often live music and some even light a large campfire as soon as the sun goes down and treat you with a small fire show.

Go diving or snorkeling
The north coast of Bali has one of the most beautiful underwater worlds in Bali. The water here is crystal clear and mostly around 26° C. You can go diving or snorkeling at Menjangan Island, which is known as one of the most beautiful and well-preserved snorkel and dive spots on the island. Also, Lovina Reef is home to an incredible underwater world. You can expect to see stunning and colorful corals, plants, fish, and even sea turtles, with a visibility of up to 40 meters.
Note: Lovina is known for its dolphin (snorkel) tours. However, we strongly advise against booking such a tour. Apparently, especially during sunrise, the dolphins are surrounded by dozens of boats, all of which together make a lot of noise and they really chase the dolphins, which can cause a lot of stress for the animals.

Sekumpul and Fiji waterfall
If you thought we had talked about all the beautiful waterfalls in north Bali by now, you were wrong! There are 2 more waterfalls that are really worth a visit: Sekumpul and Fiji waterfall. And there’s actually a third one as well, called the Hidden Waterfall. These waterfalls are located a little further from the most famous towns of Munduk and Lovina, and are therefore perfect to visit during a day trip. They are all close to each other and there are a number of different ways to visit them. For example, you can choose to only view the Sekumpul and Fiji waterfall from above from a viewpoint. You can also do a trek to Sekumpul and Hidden waterfall or all three waterfalls.
Tip: The Lemukih waterslide (see below) is located near these waterfalls. So, you can easily visit these together during your day trip!
Practical
Viewpoint only: 20.000 IDR per person
Medium trekking (Sekumpul and Hidden waterfall: 150.000 IDR per person
Long trekking (all three): 250.000 IDR per person
It is mandatory to go with a guide, hence the high prices. Be aware of scammers that charge even more!

Lemukih Waterslide
Hidden Gem alert! One of the most cool and fun things to do in the north of Bali is the Lemukih water slide. It is a 45-meter natural waterslide in the middle of the rice fields and lush jungle. Hop on a rubber band and slide down a series of cascading rocky slides, landing in the small natural pools along the way. Nature can be not only beautiful but also fun! Not far from the water slides, you can also do cliff jumping into the water. We decided to stick to only the water slide.

Practical Information
Best time to visit the north of Bali
The best time to explore northern Bali is during the dry season, which generally runs from April to October. During this period the weather is pleasant with lower humidity. July and August are the peak months, so expect more visitors then.
Keep in mind that even in the dry season, northern Bali gets a bit more rainfall than the south, so occasional showers are still possible. The shoulder months—April, May, and October—bring slightly more rain but also fewer crowds, a lush green landscape, and more powerful waterfalls. If you’re visiting during the wet season (November to March), expect heavier rains and higher humidity.
How to get to the north of Bali
There are no shuttles driving to the north of Bali. So to get there with your luggage from anywhere else in Bali, you can either rent a car yourself or hire a driver. Know that the north of Bali is more mountainous, so the roads here are steeper and have more curves. If you are traveling from Ubud or Canggu to the north of Bali, the drive is around 2 hours. If you are coming straight from the airport in Denpasar, it’ll take around 2,5 hours.
On the way from the south to the north, you can make a few additional stops along the way. A few suggestions we can give are the Leke Leke waterfall, the Nungnung waterfall, the Jatiluwih rice terraces, and the Jati Wangi coffee plantation. If you are traveling between Lovina in the north and Amed in the east, an interesting place to stop is the unique Gretek black sand beach.
Alternatively, you can also join some day trips or rent a driver for a full day to explore the north from other places in Bali.

How to get around
The best way to explore the different areas in the north of Bali is by motorbike. You can often rent a scooter at your accommodation or you can find various scooter rentals in the bigger villages. Prices vary from 60.000 to 100.000 IDR per 24 hours. You can also hire a private driver or join a complete day tour, including some of the highlights of the north of Bali.
To move yourself and your luggage between the different areas/villages such as Lovina and Munduk, or if you’re unsure about driving a scooter, it is best to hire a driver. Your accommodation can often arrange a driver for you or you can book transport or tours on the street with various tour operators in the villages.

How many days for the north of Bali
Because there are so many beautiful places in the north of Bali, you can easily spend days here. If you want to see the most beautiful waterfalls and sights, we recommend that you stay at least 4 to 5 days, depending on how much you want to relax between exploring and whether you want to do other activities such as scuba diving or snorkeling.
Where to Stay
There are plenty of options to stay in the north of Bali for every budget. The best bases to discover the north of Bali are Munduk and Lovina. We first stayed in Munduk and then stayed a few nights in Lovina. If you like glamping, we highly recommend staying at Desa Eko in Munduk. They offer different glamping tents and their restaurant the Botanist has the most delicious food! On top of that, it is also the place where you can start one of the top things to do in the north of Bali.
