Visiting the Gitgit Waterfall
Gitgit Waterfall is situated in the northern part of Bali, near the town of Singaraja. It is actually a series of waterfalls, with the waterfall we talk about in this blog post as the main waterfall, being the most popular. The water flows down from a height of approximately 48 meters in picturesque beautiful surroundings.
To reach the waterfall, you have to do a short trek through the ‘jungle’ along a well-marked, paved walkway, lined with little souvenir shops. Some sellers were quite pushy, which made the experience a little less pleasant. But the Gitgit waterfall itself makes it more than worth it!
The area around Gitgit Waterfall is also considered sacred by the locals, and there are some myths and stories associated with the place. This Bali waterfall is believed to have spiritual significance.
It is one of the more popular waterfalls in north Bali, so it can get quite busy here. If you’d like to avoid the crowds and have the best light for photos, we recommend going early in the morning.
Note: As the Gitgit waterfalls are actually a series of waterfalls, don’t mix this waterfall up with the other Gitgit Twin waterfall. This is another waterfall located close to this Gitgit waterfall. We didn’t visit the twin one, but it might be worth a visit too!

The hike to Gitgit Waterfall
When you come from this parking lot, the trail starts a bit to the left, on the opposite side of the street. You will see a big green sign with ‘Welcome to Gitgit Waterfall’. You can not miss it, but just in case, you can find the exact location of the start of the trail here.
The path first takes you along a couple of houses, but after a while, it heads into a greener and forested surrounding. After around 250 meters, you pass the official ticket office where you pay the 20.000 IDR entrance fee.
The path consists of some flat sections and a number of stairs. Along the way, you will pass numerous souvenir shops.
After the last descent, you arrive at the little Bali gate, after which the path ends. To reach the foot of the falls, you have to continue over the rocks. Be careful, because the splashing water can make the rocks very slippery.
The distance from the car park to the waterfall is around 850 meters and will take you 10-15 minutes.
The guide scam
You do not need a guide to get to the Gitgit waterfall.
Sometimes, there are scammers in the parking lot who will claim that you need a guide. This is absolutely not the case, as it is a clear path to follow. Just politely say you don’t need a guide and continue walking to the start of the trail. From here, you can simply follow the paved path. Only pay your ticket of 20.000 IDR at the official ticket office along the trail.
If you prefer to avoid all this hassle, you can also choose to just join a tour. This way, you already have a local guide and you avoid being scammed.
How to get to Gitgit waterfall
To get to the Gitgit Waterfall, you can either rent a scooter or a private car with a driver. It’s a 30-minute drive from Lovina or a 45-minute drive from Munduk. Alternatively, you can also join a waterfall tour, including the Gitgit Waterfall and the Aling Aling Waterfall.
You will find several parking lots and pins on Google Maps for the Gitgit Waterfall. This parking lot is the closest to the start of the trail to the one and only Gitgit waterfall.

Best time to visit
Season
You can visit the Gitgit waterfall all year round. The most popular time to visit is during dry season from April to October. However, during the rainy season, the waterfall is most powerful and spectacular. If you prefer to visit with more chances for better weather, fewer crowds, and still a very powerful waterfall, then it’s best to visit at the beginning of dry season.
Time of the day
The best time to visit this waterfall is before noon to visit with fewer people. The later in the day you arrive, the more people you can expect at the waterfall. If you want to be almost certain that you have the waterfall just for yourself and for the best lighting, we recommend that you go as early in the morning as possible.
Where to stay
The best places to base yourself to visit the Gitgit waterfall, and other great places in the north of Bali, are Munduk and Lovina. From Munduk, it is a 45-minute drive, but you can combine a visit to Gitgit with other stunning waterfalls in the region, like the Banyu Wana Amertha waterfall. From Lovina, you have to drive around 35 minutes, and it is also the perfect base to visit the Sekumpul Waterfall. In both villages, you find some lovely accommodation options for every budget.
